Coton de Tulear
Coton de Tulear (translation: cotton of Tulear, Madagascar) are friendly, playful dogs that make great companions. They don't get over about 16 lbs. and are well suited to apartment living. But they're not wimpy little dogs that can't stand to go outside. Ours love going for long walks and hikes in Austin & Colorado.

While they aren't prone to endless barking like some dogs, they are alert to surprise visitors and make good watchdogs. Despite their small size, they aren't yappy little ankle-biters. They quickly warm up to guests and soon go about their business after getting acquainted.

Coton fur is sometimes described as fluffy but it is silky to touch. A weekly brushing makes them surprisingly easy to keep groomed. Cotons are non-shedding dogs and because they produce little dander, they are considered hypoallergenic. Bathe them every month or two and they don't have a "doggie smell" even when they get wet.

Cotons have a big-dog personality, more like a golden retriever. They are quite intelligent and learn quickly. Our grand-sire,  Luke, actually watches TV. He barks at dogs and other animals (even cartoons!) he sees on the screen, and when they exit the scene he sometimes tries to follow them.
